Multiculturalism
This video shares the definition of diversity in the form of a cartoon which would be great to introduce to students in the primary/Junior/intermediate grades. It provides great understanding with relatable examples for students in a school environment.
I chose this resource because on my previous experience day, a student approached me during the religion period and asked "Can you explain to what ethnicity means?". I asked him what he thought it meant first. The student replied, "I don't know, doesn't it mean to be diverse?" It stood out to me that there may still be a misunderstanding of the differences between ethnicity and diversity.
This video would be a useful tool in demonstrating the term diversity as it related to real-world contexts, school. In chapter one of "Talking Diversity with Teachers and Teacher Educators", teaching diversity had to be relatable to the real world. This video presents a clear example of the difference between what an African-American and Asian-American are using two students in the playground. It is important to give students clarification on the different terms in order for them to understand and accept differences. This teaches students to care for and respect one another as individuals and be inclusive with each other.
