Classroom Tools

Sitting on my classroom observations and doing my own research, I believe that introducing technology in the classroom has had a significant impact on student learning. I have witnessed IPads, Chromebooks and personal devices be used with various apps or websites that allow students to be more engaged in their learning.

The fact that teachers have began to implement technology into the classroom, relates directly to the OCT standard of Professional Practice. Technology has been used to accommodate student needs and learning (i.e. for scribing, allowing students to do projects online instead of on paper etc.). Teachers have become more flexible in their teaching methods and in my experiences have had their students become more responsive and engaged in learning. Students want to play these fun games, which they don't necessarily realize they are actually learning. For example, Kahoot is frequently used in my placement classroom and the students love it. It makes learning competitive and the students are motivated to answer questions correctly. It serves as a great way for students to demonstrate their understanding of information taught in lessons.

Also, technology has been used to help students with accommodations on IEP's to assist in their learning. Teachers have adjusted their classrooms to be become more comfortable for student learning. This also relates to the concept we have discussed of becoming a 21st Century classroom or also known as "The New" method of teaching. This has become so importance because students now are constantly exposed to technology outside the classroom. In some cases, they know more about what the gadgets are capable of than us. Being open to learn new strategies to approach teaching is crucial in becoming a very effective educator.
