Self-Regulation

This is a picture placed in all primary classes throughout my placement school, and it assists students in self regulation. Each day, the students identify which colour they can relate to in terms of thoughts, behaviours, and emotions.

I have had the opportunity to discuss with the leading CYW in my placement school who's idea it was to put this board together. He said it is particularly for students with exceptionalities or behaviour issues with the goal of helping them identify how they feel as well as assist students in regulating their emotions/mood. Some teachers have had their students create a journal log with identifying their moods each day and explain why they feel the colour they do. This helps students recognize the mood they are in and may help diffuse that mood a little and make them feel better.

This relates to the ministry document of "Caring in Safe Schools in Ontario" as they mention self-regulation as a key skill in guiding and modifying behaviour for students. By identifying their mood/colour, it allows students to think before they act and regulate their emotions, as well as revise their plans to make better decisions.
